USS SPROSTON (DD/DDE-577)

INVITATION TO THE PITTSBURGH REUNION 14-18 SEPTEMBER 2011

Pittsburgh, PA is our reunion destination this year and many interesting activities have been planned. We register and check into the downtown Sheraton Station Square Hotel Wednesday afternoon. Super Shuttle is available from the PIT Airport; taxi service is also an option. The train depot is downtown, close to the hotel. Room rate of $109/night + tax is good for three days before/after the reunion. Registration cutoff date is 25 August firm! Please call the hotel directly at 412.261.2000 or 800.325.3535 and register early so we can better serve you and your guests. If we don't occupy all the hotel rooms contracted for, the Reunion Group has to absorb the cost. They’re ready to accept your phone reservation now!

Thursday we visit the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum for our memorial service. This museum is the only one in the nation to honor members of all branches of service; their Gettysburg Room is dedicated to the Civil War. Then we’re off to the Nationality Rooms at the University of Pittsburgh. This historical landmark focuses on the heritages, traditions and religious holidays of represented nations. A box lunch is provided before being bussed to the Phipps Conservatory, one of the world’s greenest public gardens during their Summer Flower Show: “Living Harmoniously with Nature.” Its beautiful space is in full bloom as eight local interior designers incorporate sustainable textiles, architectural elements and decor into 17 indoor gardens. Bus departs for the hotel at 1500.

Friday we embark on a guided bus tour of Pittsburgh and later visit the Heinz History Center. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, the History Center is the largest history museum in Pennsylvania. The 275,000 sq. ft. museum features six floors of long-term and changing exhibition space, including the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, a dynamic museum-within-a-museum and the Library & Archives, an extensive scholarly resource documenting 250 years of life in Western Pennsylvania. About midday we return for lunch at Buca di Beppo, adjacent to the hotel to complete the day.

Our business meeting this year is 0930 Saturday. Saturday evening will be devoted to the festivities of the social hour, bar, banquet, raffle and the very exciting Tamburitzans, a unique ensemble of talented young folk artists dedicated to the performance and preservation of the music, songs, and dances of Eastern Europe and neighboring folk cultures. Many of you enjoyed the spellbinding Tamburitzans at the Milwaukee reunion.

The farewell breakfast buffet will begin early Sunday morning. Len Doran, Ship’s Store Operator, will have items available at the reunion or you may order from him directly. Please register early and book with the hotel directly by telephone before 25 Aug; rooms have been reserved for our use exclusively. Cost of City public parking adjacent to the hotel has been negotiated down to $16/day for our group. Everything you need is included with this invitation. We hope to see all of you and especially those for whom this may be a first reunion. Meet you in Pittsburgh!  --Michael Bereskin, ET2
